Oklahoma City University Adds World Religions Degree
OKLAHOMA CITY— Oklahoma City University will add a bachelor's degree in world religions to its academic offerings next semester, Wimberly School of Religion Dean and Oikos Provost Mark Davies announced today.
Davies said the degree program will offer students new opportunities to pursue the academic study of world religions, and it will serve as a second major option for business, philosophy, political science and sociology students, among others. The world religions major is also an excellent option for students in the Oikos Scholars Program for Social and Ecological Sustainability at Oklahoma City University.
“Given the global challenges related to peace, social justice, ecological sustainability; understanding different religions and cultures is a necessity for our lives together in the 21st Century,” Davies said.
In addition to two religion courses in the general education curriculum (Introduction to Biblical Literature and Introduction to World Religions), students pursuing the world religions major will take the following courses:
1. REL 2023 Methods of Biblical Analysis – 3 credits.
2. REL 2413 Philosophy of Religion – 3 credits.
3. One course in Jewish Studies (selected from the following: REL 2103 Introduction to Judaism, REL 2203 Modern Jewish Thought, REL 2813 The Jewish Experience in America, and REL 2823 Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust) – 3 credits.
4. One (3000-4000 level) course in Christian Theology- 3 credits.
5. REL 4163: Seminar in Philosophy and Theology: Comparative Religious Ethics – 3 credits.
6. Three (3000-4000 level) courses in related to World Religions (Current Offerings – Religion and Philosophy of South Asia, Islamic Philosophy and Religion, Confucianism, Primal Religions, Native American Religion, and Religious Dialogue and Responses to Pluralism)– 9 credits
7. One religion elective – 3 credits
8. REL 3953 Junior Seminar – 3 credits
9. REL 4873 Senior Paper – 3 credits
